Mathematics Placement Policy

California Mathematics Placement Policy

Senate Bill no. 359 California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 states:  School districts must have a fair, objective, and transparent mathematics placement policy for pupils entering grade 9.  The Board Policy and two exhibits regarding Mathematics Placement Protocol were adopted by the Board on June 14, 2016.

The Standards for Mathematical practice describe eight practices that mathematics educators at all levels (K-12) should seek to develop in their students.  These practices rest on important "habits of mind" processes and proficiencies that both enable a student to gain mathematical expertise as well as demonstrate, apply and adapt that expertise to situations:
