The brand new Will Rogers running team of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students took 2nd place for VUSD and 3rd place overall in elementary division at the Summerfest 3,000 meter run on Saturday May 30th! Fourth grade students built, tested, and raced solar cars this week as part of their yearlong study of energy sources. Students worked in small groups to build the cars, then took them out into the sun to test them out. They were pleasantly surprised to see the wheels immediately spinning when the solar panel was pointed towards the sun! In May, Mr. Soles' 5th grade class went on a special field trip to the UC Santa Barbara Chemistry Lab. At the lab, UCSB Chemistry students and professors led the 5th graders through several different hands-on and educational chemistry activities. We celebrated the reclassification of the following English language learners: Erick Castro, Jaeson Gutierrez, Kamea Kellner, Manuel Gama, Damanjeet Khaira and Xitlalic Rodriguez.  These students are now English proficient!  Congratulations! Also, our DELAC parents received a special recognition for their participation and advocacy for English language learners at the district level.  

On April 23rd all four of our Kindergarten classes took a trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo! Upon arrival, all students got to experience a special "Animal Senses" class where Zoo educators led students through all of the ways animals use their senses to survive. Students got to see and hold creepy crawly critters, simulate the ways that animals use their sense of smell, play a predator vs. prey game, and learn all about lizards and their skin. Although we celebrate our planet everyday at Will Rogers, Earth Day was an extra special day to celebrate environmental science! All first, third, and fifth grade classes went to the cafeteria for a special Harvest of the Month food tasting to celebrate the amazing fruits and vegetables our Earth provides us to eat. International Day was an awesome trip around the world.  Each grade level represented a country or area of the world. Kindergarteners took us to Asia to see panda bears, Chinese lanterns and koi ponds. First grade allowed us to travel all over South America where we got to listen to samba music, see the ancient ruins of Tikal, and learn about the many countries of South America. Along with being amazing scholars, our Will Rogers students are wonderful artists too! Mrs. Cherry, our art specialist teacher, visits classrooms throughout all grade levels during the week. She teaches students various exciting forms of art. 

Our Will Rogers Spelling Bee champion Adler Striegel well represented us in the annual Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 7, 2015. The spellers ranged between 3rd grade- 8th grade. 37 kids scored high enough to go on to the oral bee. 123 schools participated this year. Only one of the 123 kids got all of the words correct and about 7 missed one- putting Addie in the top 10 going into the Oral Bee. Addie rocked the written test only missing one!
