CA State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson Visits Will Rogers!

posted on

On Monday November 23rd, California state senator Hannah-Beth Jackson came on a very special visit to see environmental science in action at our school. Fifth graders Boden, Sinthia, Lizajane, Diego, and Alonda R. hosted the tour and showed off their fifth grade garden experiment where they are comparing the growth of radishes in both organic and conventional soil. The students also took Ms. Jackson to our science lab, where they described lessons they’ve done such as building solar cars, wind turbines, and using LEGO robotics. We also stopped by the schoolyard habitat to show Ms. Jackson how the QR codes work to identify plants, and Alondra and Lizajane explained how our campus bioswale helps to filter water. During our tour it was great to see so many 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders out using the schoolyard habitat for various outdoor lessons. We concluded the tour in Mrs. Bento's Kindergarten classroom where Ms. Jackson got to see the students analyzing seashells as part of an environmental science unit on ocean biomes. It was an exciting day for Will Rogers students and staff, and we are thankful for Ms. Jackson's visit!
