This Fall we hosted our first after school Coding class for 3rd - 5th graders using the CODE.org Course II curriculum. The class was taught by our computer lab paraeducator Lisa Chapman, with help from parent Hani Geske, and MSAP science teacher Mrs. de Witte. During the class students learning the basics of programming using both "unplugged" activities without the computer, and online coding challenges using fun characters such as Angry Birds and Flappy. By the end of the course students became familiar with algorithms, loops, conditionals, events, binary, and protecting their digital footprint. During the last class they got to combine all of their knowledge and create their own version of "Flappy," a popular app-based game.
The same students will be invited to attend the Winter session of CODE.org, Course III, where they will expand their knowledge of coding in a more advanced setting. First and second graders can look forward to coding this year too, with a special CODE.org course this Spring designed specially for young readers. Permission slips for the 1st and 2nd grade class will be sent home in early March. Will Rogers plans to offer this exciting new STEM programming for many years to come.
