School of Choice

Serra is a VUSD School of Choice, meaning that students from outside the Serra boundaries may apply to attend our school.  There is an application window and a lottery to determine spots dependent upon the space available.  Once a student is accepted on SOC they are always welcome to stay at Serra.  Please click here to see the VUSD website for more information.

Lunchtime Sports Program
4th and 5th grade students may participate in lunchtime sporting tournaments.  Sign ups are announced and teams are chosen, followed by approximately three weeks of games that culminate in playoffs and a championship.  The activities are soccer, field hockey, flag-football, basketball, softball, kickball, track and field, and volleyball.  All games are supervised and occur during lunch recess.

Indian Education
Ventura Unified School District operates an Indian-Education program for students throughout Ventura County.  At Serra School, this is a monthly pull-out program for students identified as Native American.  Instruction is focused on reading skills and Native American history and culture.  The simple one page registration form requires that you state the tribe or group of your family ancestry and a family member's tribal membership number.  To sign up, ask the school office for an enrollment form.  For more information call the office of Ventura County Indian Education Consortium at (805) 641-5000, Ext. 1192.

ELD
The English Language Development program at Serra School focuses on building academic skills of students whose primary language is not English.  Additional resources such as supplemental curricula, computer programs, and bilingual para-educators may be used to assist students in acquiring English skills.

5th Grade Leadership
5th Grade students at Serra School are encouraged to apply for the 5th Grade Leadership team, which advises the Principal regarding student activities and needs/concerns.  The Leadership team meets on a regular basis to discuss, plan, and vote on activities such as spirit days, talent shows, and assemblies.

Cross Country Team- Students who wish to participate in our school cross country team must have the proper paperwork in order to practice and compete in meets.  Practices are held afterschool from 2:45-3:15 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please contact Coach Alli Quiroz for information.

GATE
The Gifted And Talented Education program at Serra is driven by a staff who believes in the necessity of differentiated instruction for all students, whether they are identified as “gifted” or not because every child has a unique way of learning.  In addition to differentiated instruction in the classroom, students in the GATE program are involved in a pull-out program that offers ongoing enrichment activities such as a film class, a poetry course, and a couple of live plays.

SDC-ED Program
Serra School operates the only elementary special-day class for emotionally disturbed students in VUSD.  Students in this setting are typically in need of a smaller classroom with additional resources such as trained para-educators and a behavioral therapist.  All students have Individual Education Plans and are given accommodations to reach annual goals and a standards-based education.
