Meet Ms. Lomax

Velma Lomax was first elected to the Board in 1993. She and her husband raised their daughter, Ronae in Oak View, where they are now enjoying their two grandchildren, Jadon and Kaylee along with their step granddaughter, Madyson.

Having been a very involved parent, Velma served two terms as PTA president at DeAnza Middle School, two terms as PTSA president at Ventura High School, served on many district committees and served on both the Ventura council and District PTA boards. Always a volunteer for any project that involved children, Velma also taught parenting classes at DeAnza Middle School with the Quest program.

With grad night being, statistically, the most dangerous night of the year for teenagers, Velma's greatest passion is the all-night, drug, alcohol and tobacco free graduation party for all the graduating senior in the Ventura Unified School District. She was one of the founding members and has served in the capacity of chair and then co-char for the past 16 years. The party has grown from 75 students to 900! This yearly event also incorporates a district-wide staff party the night before so that the staff members can experience a bit a grad night.

In her personal life, Velma has been a technology instructor for the Regional Occupational Program for the past 10 years. She teaches Computer Repair and Maintenance, Cisco Networking/Networking Technologies, Computer Securities, and Practical Computer Literacy. Through her program, many student have found full time, well-paying jobs in the IT field. She formerly taught Cisco Networking at Ventura College as well. her educational credentials include a degree from Heald's Business College, Certified Legal Assistant, computer Systems Technician Certification from Technology Development Center, and two vocational credentials. She worked as a legal assistant for 26 years before becoming a teacher, but admits that teaching is her passion. She loves to work with all students, getting involved in their ability to become productive, skilled workers.
